The Room of Memory 1999-2002 Single channel video/sound Installation (10min)

Kim Seung-young taped a photo of Joseb Beuys` to the wall of his room. He found it interesting that the photo had fallen off the wall in a different way each morning. For thes video work, Kim Seung-young made a life-size photograph of himself and taped it up to fall down again just as the one of JB had done. Superimposed in the repetitive action of replacing the photo, he begins to disappear from the surface of the screen. In this way, the photograph becomes more physically present and the artist, ephemeral. Representing himself as a disappearing spirit repeatedly rehanging a photo of himself, the artist finds an analogy to the meditative gesture of picking himself up from despair.
